Footscray Bulldogs VFL coach Steve Grace has commended second year rookie, Nathan Mullenger-McHugh on his development throughout the 2018 season.
Booting four goals in last Saturday’s VFL clash with North Melbourne, Mullenger-McHugh has solidified himself as a key forward in the Dogs’ VFL side, while also holding the skills to move into defence.
Grace told westernbulldogs.com.au that Mullenger-McHugh’s versatility and aggression were key factors in his improvement during his second year.
“Nathan’s aerial game is really strong, he’s got a great pair of hands and the timing of his marking has really improved,” said Grace.
“His ability to read the play is improving but he’s also quite aggressive, so his tackling is strong. He has a real desire and intent to tackle, which is really important.”
Spending the first half of the year in defence, Grace highlighted Mullenger-McHugh’s ability to adopt multiple roles during a game – a key strength in his game throughout the 2018 season.
“He can play at either end of the ground,” said Grace.
“For the first part of this year he played as a defender but played most of last year as a forward, which he has shown he can do quite comfortably.
“He has good leg speed and we think at times, he may be able to play further up the ground when required.
“He’s really focussed on what he needs to do and what we require of him.”
