Williamstown Vs Port Melbourne Match Report
Williamstown met Port Melbourne in the VFL Round 7 match at Burbank Oval.
First Quarter
The first quarter was a typical tough contest with plenty of pressure being applied and many stoppages. Matthew Little was in fine form but inaccurate kicking for goal didn’t reward his fine marking. Ruckman Wayde Skipper was able to kick the opening goal with a booming kick from outside 50m. Onballers Brett Johnson, Sam Reid, Ben Davies and Guy O’Keefe were all winning plenty of the ball. The Williamstown defence were applying plenty of pressure to the Burra forwards who struggled to find space.
Williamstown 2.7 Port Melbourne 0.6
Second Quarter
Williamstown now had the use of a slight breeze and quickly set out to extend their lead. Stephen Tiller, Jason Cloke, Jarrad Boumann, Easton Wood and Cameron Lockwood were supplying plenty of rebound and up forward Chris Egan, Patrick Rose, Ayce Cordy and Matthew Little were prominent. David Stretton was having a great game and Ben Jolley, Tom Langlands, Dylan Joyce and Henry White were part of the midfield rotations. Port broke through and kicked two goals but trailed by 34 points at half time.
Williamstown 8.10 Port Melbourne 2.12
Third Quarter
Port bounced back and kicked the opening two goals of the quarter but Williamstown was able to respond in a positive manner. The tackling and intensity of the game went to another level but Willi was able to kick goals at the right time through Ben Jolley, Ben Davies and Jarrad Grant. Skipper Brett Johnson was again leading from the front as Willi again won the quarter and extended their lead to 37 points.
Williamstown 12.14 Port Melbourne 6.13
Fourth Quarter
Williamstown dominated the final quarter but were not able to reflect this on the scoreboard by kicking a wasteful 3.7 to 3.2. Jason Cloke was outstanding during this quarter and Tom Langlands and Dylan Joyce were solid contributors and Guy O’Keefe, Ben Davies and David Stretton finished full of running. Ayce Cordy kicked a great snap goal to continue his fine form as the Seagulls won by 42 points.
