Western Bulldogs key forward Bonnie Toogood says there was no holding back in Saturday’s AFLW intra-club hit-out.
With round one of the 2022 NAB AFLW season edging closer, the AFLW squad took to the field in a four-quarter contest, putting their preseason preparations to the test.
Toogood said it was great to be back in action at VU Whitten Oval.
“It was good to play a free-flowing match – we’ve done a lot of match simulation in our preparations, but to actually have a more match-like game was good,” Toogood said post-match.
“It’s a tough game – and I was in the middle of a few big bumps – but you’ve just got to train it because that’s what we’re going to do in games.
“We don’t like to hold back – that’s footy and that’s the game that we’ve signed up for.
“If we don’t (go hard) in practice matches like this, then we’re not going to do it in real matches.”
As part of the ‘Christmas at the Kennel’ formalities, the AFLW squad were also presented their guernseys for the 2022 season in front of family, friends, members and fans.
“It was good to look out and not see no-one – like it is on a Tuesday or Thursday training night,” Toogood said.
“To look up and see people there, and while walking through the race have people (cheering) – I can’t wait to see them at games.”
The AFLW Bulldogs will host Melbourne in the annual Hampson-Hardeman Cup battle on Saturday 8 January.
