Here are four of the hot topics ahead of the Bulldogs’ Elimination Final clash with Essendon in Launceston on Sunday.

1. Everything on the line

For a long, long time this season, the Bulldogs had a buffer at the top-end of the ladder as they chalked up early wins.  But as the finish line drew closer at the end of the home-and-away season, that margin for error narrowed.

We don’t need to revisit the events of last weekend, but one thing is for sure – there are no second chances now.

In Elimination Finals, there’s no tomorrow for the loser.  Last year’s heartbreaking loss to the Saints will serve as a timely reminder.

The Dogs will believe they can draw on their best form, which looked on par with the best teams in the competition.

2. Finals fever on the Apple Isle

The travelling football Covid roadshow continues, and for a second straight year it looks like the MCG and Marvel Stadium will not be required to host the pinnacle of the AFL season.

With bums on seats a priority for League headquarters, other states have been called upon to carry the can, as Victorian clubs pack their bags for anywhere between one night and four weeks away from their homes, in search of the Holy Grail.

For the Dogs, it’s a trip south to Launceston’s UTAS Stadium, which will host its first ever AFL final.

If they can get over the Bombers, another final in another state awaits the Bulldogs. Here’s hoping the frequent flyer miles keep racking themselves up.

3. Keath the Wright match-up

The last time the Dogs and Dons locked horns, the main difference was the straight-shooting ‘two-metre’ Peter Wright, who jagged seven straight majors to lead the Bombers to a 13-point win.

The mainstay of the Bulldogs’ defensive unit – Alex Keath – was nursing a sore hamstring that night at Marvel Stadium, exposing an inexperienced back-end.

Keath has been a dependable rock for the Dogs since he walked in the door, and he’ll play a key role on Sunday if the red, white and blue can salute.

Of course, we know the Bombers have several threats up forward, and it’ll take a team effort to keep their impact to a minimum.

4. There in spirit

Bulldogs fans have been extraordinary in their support of the Club over the journey, and the last two years have been as tough as ever.

We know Dogs fans in Victoria would’ve loved nothing more than to let the players hear their voice when it matters most, in the finals.

Instead, the Club has been inundated with messages of support, photos and videos this week as the best fans in the league try to get their team over the line.

A message to Dogs fans in Tasmania who are lucky enough to have a seat at UTAS - we’re counting on you. Wave your flags, cheer as one, and together we will Yield to None!
