1. First quarter blitz
For the first time all season, the Bulldogs lost an opening quarter.
Melbourne blitzed the hosts in a frenetic opening period, kicking the first goal of the game inside the opening minute.
The Dees had kicked six goals at quarter time – and missed some opportunities to add others – to open up a 27-point lead, that ultimately proved insurmountable.
Uncharacteristically, the Bulldogs skills let them down early. All six goals were the result of disposal chains that began with a Bulldog turnover.
2. English back in business
After four weeks out due to concussion, Tim English made his return to football against the Dees.
The ruck-forward was among the Bulldogs’ best on a disappointing night.
English settled back in as though he hadn’t missed a beat.
He finished with 15 disposals, nine marks and two goals, offering the Bulldogs an avenue to goal when forward and also taking some strong grabs around the ground.
3. Magnetic Macrae sets new record
It comes no surprise to anyone, but Jack Macrae is having another outstanding year.
The two-time All Australian midfielder again found the ball at will against the Dees.
Macrae has had more possessions (387) in the first 11 rounds of a VFL-AFL season than any player, ever.
He had another 36 disposals on Friday night and is yet to dip below 30 in a game this year.
But more than just the numbers, Macrae’s having a big impact. He’s also averaging 500.7 metres gained, eight score involvements and 5.3 inside-50s per game – which all put him in elite territory.
