Education and teaching has become a central theme at Whitten Oval under Senior Coach Brendan McCartney and Western Bulldogs’ ruckman Will Minson says the Club’s leaders are wholeheartedly buying into the approach.

Minson said the Bulldogs’ senior players are embracing Coach McCartney’s vision and their role in educating younger teammates.

“Since Brendan McCartney arrived at the footy club there has been a really strong emphasis on teaching across the board,” Minson said.

“He hasn’t shied away from the teachings that the young kids need and also that the older guys need.

“He’s brought a new game plan to the footy club and we’ve all got things to learn and part of being a little bit more senior is you can understand the concepts a bit more quickly and help the young guys to get a grasp of those concepts as well.”

Standing at 199cm and over 105kg, Minson also sees part of his role is providing physical protection to his smaller and younger teammates.

“There is a responsibility being one of the bigger guys on the team to help look after the smaller players and I enjoy that,” he said.

With two consecutive wins heading into the break, Minson said the Bulldogs are not relying on their recent form to carry them through the second half of the season — instead he and his teammates are focused on continuous improvement

“We are all too aware of where we are at at the halfway mark of the season, we still have a lot of things to improve on,” he said.

“We are by no means sitting back and taking a rest - we are on a pretty steady curve of improvement and we’ve got a lot of things we need to get better at.

“But it certainly makes the ten days far more enjoyable knowing that we got the points and you sleep a bit easier until the next game.”
