Blooding eight first gamers this season alone, Western Bulldogs Assistant Coach Steven King said the energy and enthusiasm the new recruits bring to the game has helped keep morale high at Whitten Oval.

While the Bulldogs recent win - loss ratio has been less than ideal, it is the injection of youth and desperation of the new breed to grab their opportunities that has impressed King.

“When young players are playing they are so exuberant and just so happy to be playing and fulfilling their dream of playing league footy and for us as a coaching group, although it is frustrating at times not winning games of footy,” King said, “… the next best thing is I think about giving opportunities to players and to see them come out and grab it.”

The Bulldogs have consistently fielded one of the youngest team’s in the league this season, with the Club playing seven players with less than ten games experience last week against Richmond.

Sunday’s first gamer Lin Jong is one of many players that King believes should excite fans about the future with his attack on the ball and competitive nature.

“To see Lin Jong come out and not look out of place, yeah sure he has things to work on but I think what we saw is a competitive young man that just wants to fulfil his dream and play league footy.

“That’s exciting I think all of the boys, even the older guys who are unfortunately not out there at the moment get a real lift from that as well.”

Matched by only GWS Giants and the Gold Coast Suns, the Bulldogs have blooded all bar four players on their primary and rookie lists combined - other Clubs have as many as 12 players yet to debut.

King said giving opportunities to a number of young men has been largely positive but the lack of experience has in part attributed to the second half fade outs in recent weeks.

“It is really exciting for a coach to give those players the opportunity,” he said, “…but with that, I guess, without making excuses, I think it is a pretty brutal game.

“You see some of their hardened veterans really just fight it out to the death and be able to just keep backing up and in that fourth quarter - the game is a lot easier for someone who has been in the system for six or seven years.

“We had seven players under ten games and we have had some guys probably play ahead of the schedule when you look at the rookie list and players that have got up.”

The Bulldogs have elevated four rookie listed players this season with all four going on to debut in the red, white and blue.
