Williamstown has won their fourth consecutive game, defeating the Northern Blues by 24 points in tough conditions on Saturday.
On another wet track, the Seagulls were into the wind early and it was the visitors who used the ball better early to hit the scoreboard first.
However the young Seagulls settled and were able to resist the Blues early charge.
The midfield of Ayce Cordy, Ed Carr, Ben Jolley and Brett Goodes were in for a battle against the number one ranked stoppage team in the competition, and they responded by dominating the clearances early on.
Despite going into the breeze, the home side took a two point advantage into the first change.
With the wind at their backs Williamstown began to take full advantage in the second quarter skipping clear to a 20 point lead at the main break.
James Wall was a rock down back for the home side while Easton Wood was proving a handy inclusion providing lots of drive and run from the back half.
Patrick Veszpremi capitalised on some good work further up field to hit the scoreboard as the Gulls moved the ball better around the ground.
The Northern Blues had looked impressive in their previous two wins and showed some of that form in the third quarter, responding quickly with two David Ellard goals.
Kane Lucas added a third which reduced the deficit to just 2 points at three quarter time with the Seagulls failing to score in the quarter.
A big last quarter was looming and it was fitting that it was a big game player who stepped up to kick the first goal.
Brett Goodes weaved in between three defenders near the boundary line before curling a left foot snap through for a wonder goal which brought the crowd to their feet.
Further goals from Ayce Cordy and Patrick Veszpremi sealed the win for the home side, who secured a finals spot.
The midfield battle was crucial all day and it was the likes of Jolley, Cordy, Goodes and McCallum who were prominent for the Seagulls.
Next week produces another big clash with Williamstown hosting Sandringham in the Gulls final home game of the year. Saturday the 18th of August, 2:00pm.
