Dogs will continue to attack
Western Bulldogs forward coach Paul Williams says his side will continue to play attacking football in 2009
The Dogs piled on 372 goals in the 22 home and away rounds last season, behind only the ladder leading Geelong, and Williams said there were no plans to change their attacking style.
“We don’t want to win with eight goals, we want to kick 15 to 20,” Williams told afl.com.au.
“Rodney Eade has always been like that and nothing is going to change this year.”
Williams, who joined the club in October after a stint at Melbourne, confirmed that Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney (groin) and Robert Murphy (knee) were no certainties for the Dogs’ round one clash with Fremantle at Subiaco Oval.
“They have both played three times, just over a quarter the first game and about a half in the past two,” Williams said.
“They are a long way off what the majority of the group has done.
“Next week is still very much up for grabs for those guys, we’ll know after a big session tomorrow (Friday).”
The Dogs have tailored their training with their country-hopping start to the season specifically in mind.
“We travel five times in the first 12 rounds so we’ve been working towards that for the past eight to 10 weeks, increasing training loads before easing back,” Williams said.
“We’re off to Perth twice in the first month and, with all the travelling games, the players will need plenty of rest when they get back. So we have to be prepared.”
After the Fremantle season opener, the Dogs head back to Perth in round four to play West Coast, face Adelaide at AAMI Stadium in round seven, Sydney Swans in Canberra in round 10 and Port Adelaide in Darwin in round 12.
Williams said the club was under no illusions that finishing third last season meant anything for this year.
“Rocket has made it abundantly clear that counts for nothing now, we are all starting 0-0,” Williams said.
“Our blokes know how hard the competition is and how hard you have to work every week to get anywhere.”
