Winning the contested ball has been a big focus for 2012 with Coach Brendan McCartney trying to build a tough and ruthless Western Bulldogs outfit, so it is no surprise that there will be some new contenders for the Scott West Most Courageous Award at the Charlie Sutton Medal.
Last year’s winner Daniel Cross has continued to put his body on the line to win the hard ball and has no hesitation competing with much bigger men in a marking contest but could see some tough competition coming from his teammates.
Another highly deserving Bulldog is Liam Picken who, despite being on the receiving end of multiple bumps and bruises each week, dedicated his year to negating the opposition’s best player’s influence.
BulldogsTV asks the playing group who they think will with the Scott West Most Courageous Award. Watch on the media player above.
One of only two players to line up for every game, Picken is unyielding in his defence and as selfless as they come - he also finished the season at the top of the Bulldogs tackle count.
Another whose brave antics could see him putting pressure on Picken and Cross for the award is Dylan Addison - regardless of where he played on the field he laid on the defensive pressure hard and fast.
Uncompromising towards his opponent and the contest, the 24 year old stays on task whether it is pretty football or not - even a broken jaw against Essendon in round 14 wasn’t enough to reign in his game style.
Newcomer Clay Smith has shown he has what it takes to earn the courageous tag, backing himself to withstand tackles against highly regarded opposition, getting up after every heavy hit and not being afraid to get his hands dirty if it will benefit the team.
Rookie elevation Lin Jong also made a name for himself late in the season for his valiant and often fearless efforts in his first four senior games.
While it is unlikely that his end of season cameo will be rewarded with the Scott West Courageous Award he certainly turned heads and will be breathing down his teammates’ necks next year if given the opportunity.
