Higgins keen to captain
Shaun Higgins has put up his hand to skipper the Bulldogs
The 22-year-old has been in the leadership group since 2009 and admits he has aspirations to hold the role vacated by retired veteran Brad Johnson.
"Whether it's today or in a couple of years, it would be nice," he told afl.com.au this week.
"I like that sort of role. Anyone in the leadership group would aspire towards being a captain at some stage.
"We've got plenty of guys in the same boat and whoever takes it over could do a great job and have the support of the rest of the group."
Higgins said it was hard to assess if he was considered ready to take on the challenge of captaincy after five years at Whitten Oval.
However, he believed the Dogs would make the right call with the decision.
"There's guys that have been around for a long time and it depends on which way the club wants to go," he said.
"It doesn't really matter who takes it; we've had a pretty solid and tight leadership group for a number of years so whoever gets it will get a title of captaincy and have the eight or nine other guys in the group supporting them."
Coach Rodney Eade said there was no hurry to appoint a new skipper and expected it to happen towards the end of pre-season.
Higgins said the Dogs' New Zealand adventure camp, which began last Saturday, would help to unearth candidates from within and outside of the leadership group.
"Normally guys like to stand up in that sort of thing and I think it will be a challenge for the whole group, let alone the leaders," he said.
Higgins expects to play in the NAB Cup, which begins for the Dogs against Geelong and North Melbourne on February 20 at Skilled Stadium, after missing the tail end of this season with thyroiditis.
"I'll be definitely fit and ready to go then, and you need a few games as a hit out, so I'll use that to get the confidence up in terms of games and after having a disappointing end to the year," he said.
"I haven't sat down and worked out game time and stuff like that but it's definitely something that I'll be involved in; it's just a matter of extent."
