Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has lauded the efforts of emerging ruckman Tim English in Thursday night’s 28-point win against the Sydney Swans.
The 22-year-old big man was one of the best players on the ground, despite contending the Swans’ dual ruck set-up of Callum Sinclair and Sam Naismith for the bulk of the night.
“He was out there pretty much the whole game, Tim, tonight,” Beveridge said post-game.
“I thought his ruck work was as impactful as it has been and then his game in the turnover side of things was influential.
“He’s growing all the time.”
English may have been beaten in the hit-out tally, but he made his presence felt around the ground.
He finished with an equal team-high 22 disposals alongside midfielder Jack Macrae – a new career-best – and capped off a four-quarter effort with the final goal of the game.
Five intercepts were complemented by four score involvements, five inside-50s and three clearances, highlighting English’s ability to get the ball, win it back or impact offensively.
“We’ve just got to keep working to his strengths and getting some advantage from his capabilities,” Beveridge said.
“Tonight was a prime example of what he’s capable of, it was a terrific performance.
“Tim was quite exceptional tonight, I thought.”
English’s resurgence over the past fortnight after a tough start to 2020 has culminated with a pair of Bulldog victories, rectifying an 0-2 start to the year.
Beveridge said his side had started to show its potential in recent weeks against the two Sydney sides.
“I mentioned after we dropped a couple that we’re working ourselves out, but we think we can do it pretty quickly,” he said.
“The last two weeks have been good examples of maybe what we’re capable of.
“But there’s plenty of challenges up ahead.”
