Bob Murphy has been in the box seat to watch Tom Liberatore begin his football apprenticeship and says the father-son recruit’s first 50 games rate in the top echelon of young players he’s seen.

Firming as one of the best contested players in the league, Liberatore said it has been a dream to play for the Western Bulldogs and represent the same Club as his father, Tony Liberatore.

“It has come very quickly and the last three years have been a dream to play week in and week out,” Liberatore said.

The 21-year-old has been quick to establish himself as part of the Bulldogs midfield contingent, with his clean hands and composure in close being pivotal to the Club’s contested brand of football.

“I have progressively felt more comfortable, obviously this year more than ever,” he said.

“This year has definitely been a massive step, I suppose as a team and individually - the next step is to become more of a leader on field.”

Averaging 25 possessions, over six tackles and almost eight clearances per game, Liberatore has had a good start to his career but thoughts of the future are already creeping into his mind.

“Especially this year, I’ve grown [relationships] a lot stronger with Clay [Smith] and Jakey Stringer coming in and keep building with Dahl [Luke Dahlhaus] and Mitch [Wallis] and blokes the same age,” he said.

“We talk about what could happen and it’s pretty exciting to be a part of something that could be pretty special, so I definitely think about it.”
