Season in short:
Cooney enjoyed his finest season in years, thanks in large part to an uninterrupted summer of training. The Brownlow Medallist was back to his explosive best with 19 goals and eight games of over 30 possessions from his 19 outings. Among his 2013 achievements, the 28-year-old played a memorable 200th game in a dramatic win over Adelaide and placed seventh in the Bulldogs best and fairest. Cooney’s hard running saw him accumulate the ninth most uncontested possessions per game of any player in the competition. Bulldogs players and fans alike delighted in his re-signing at season's end and commitment to the Club until the end of 2015.
Stat that mattered:
Cooney’s resurgent form was a boost for the rebuilding Bulldogs in season 2013 and the statistics certainly support his lift in performance. His eight 30+ disposal performances was a far cry from 2012 where he was unable to break the barrier. Cooney also kicked ten more goals from five extra games and at an average of five extra effective disposals per game.
What they said:
“I think the last probably 12 months I’ve just been able to get to a position where I could train, I did a lot of the preseason, which I got fit enough to play out games which I haven’t been able to do for three or four years. I’ve been consistently training, and the body is feeling really good.”
- Adam Cooney after playing his 200th game and re-signing with the Club in August.
Pre-season focus:
Looking to back up with a second full pre-season, Cooney’s prime focus will be ensuring his body is in top shape for 2014. The midfielder has a real opportunity to build on his current momentum, continue to build on the defensive aspects of his game, and reassert himself as one of the game's most damaging players with ball in hand.
