Westernbulldogs.com.au highlights some of the Club’s upcoming community programs and events for the month of May.
1. Western Bulldogs’ Nallei Jerring (Join and Unite) Koorie Youth Program Workshop 2: Three Boys Dreaming
Wednesday 8th May,Whitten Oval
The second workshop in the Western Bulldogs’ Nallei Jerring (Join & Unite) Program will see 29 Koorie young people from across Melbourne’s West take part in a Whitten Oval experience. The young people will also build on the skills and knowledge they gained from the first “Culture & Identity” workshop.
The Bulldogs’ three indigenous players - Brett Goodes, Liam Jones and Koby Stevens - will take the boys and girls through their football experiences leading up to a screening of the documentary, “Three Boys Dreaming”.
2. WELS vs BELS Sports Challenge
Friday 10 May 2013, Whitten Oval Club Community Sports Hall
The Western English Language School will compete against students from the Broadmeadows English Language School in the inaugural WELS v BELS Sports Day at Whitten Oval. The event will provide male and female students, from culturally & linguistically diverse backgrounds, the opportunity to showcase skills across in basketball, soccer and football and create social networks with students from Melbourne’s North.
3. Bulldogs Backyard Match Visit – Fresh
Western Bulldogs vs North Melbourne, Saturday 11th May, Etihad Stadium
The Intermediate VCAL students have undertaken the Scope Young Ambassadors program as a personal development unit. Scope Young Ambassadors aims to raise awareness in youth about people with a disability as a way of increasing opportunity within the community for them.
In conjunction with the partnership, Fresh students and Scope clients will be attending our game on Saturday 11 May 2013 against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. For many of the clients at Highpoint Industries it will be their first time at an AFL game.
4. WynBay Power Round 3 Vs Western Storm (Challenge Cup)
Wednesday 15th May 2013, 12pm – 2pm, Soldiers Reserve Cnr. College & Duncans Roads, Werribee
Reclink runs a football league that enables people in positions of disadvantage in the community to be involved in sport. Reclink relies on community organisations to support and fund the operation of this football league. Most teams align themselves with one or two supporting community organisations. SpiritWest Services in conjunction with Latitude Directions provide support to the WinBay Power team in the form of education, employment, personal development and equipment. The WynBay Power has been a force in the Reclink league for a number of years as have the Western Storm. The Power and the Storm engage in a regular fight for ascendancy as they grapple for bragging rights as the number one team in the Inner West. A number of epic clashes have come to pass paving the way for this emerging rivalry. The name given to this classic derby is the Challenge Cup.
5. CALDplay Football Program
Thursday 16th May - 13th June. Footscray: Whitten Oval 10:00am – 11:30am, St Albans: Errington Reserve, 11:00am – 12:00pm, Werribee: Soldier’s Reserve, 1:00pm – 2:00pm
The CALDplay Football Program is a seven week introductory program delivered to english learning centres across the west, targeting newly arrived youth and adults. The program culminates in the sixth annual CALDplay (Inter-AMES) football carnival held at Whitten Oval on Thursday 20 June 2013 in partnership with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The program includes an orientation session, five practical skills sessions and the carnival. Students will also be involved with making a banner for both the teams as well as a match visit to the Western Bulldogs vs Richmond clash on 22 June 2013. There are three venues this year – St Albans, Werribee and Whitten Oval - with approx. 20-30 participants at St Albans and Werribee and 60 to 80 people attending the Footscray sessions at Whitten Oval.
