Friday’s practice match may have been Shaun Higgins’ first full hitout in almost 12 months but the utility didn’t miss a beat - amassing 33 disposals and four rebound 50s in the 17 point victory against Carlton.
Higgins has adjusted to a new role across the back half with relative ease, providing many forward thrusts with his precise skills.
“I was excited to have the opportunity to play back there, [I’m] loving the new role and [there’s some] really good key players down back as well, so to work with them is a good experience,” Higgins said.
“It was nice to get through a full game and the team played really well which is a bonus.
“The basics obviously apply but it is slightly different to go in and just focus on beating your man and play footy off the back of that – I’m enjoying it so far.”
Even more pleasing signs came from the Bulldogs’ young brigade, who were alongside Higgins in putting their names front of mind come round one team selection.
Jack Macrae and Koby Stevens were again among the best performed Bulldogs players, while Tom Liberatore found 20 touches and seven clearances in just one half of football.
“They all came on and contributed pretty well, there’s a number of young guys that are knocking the door down which is great – that is what you want,” he said.
“There’s plenty of guys putting their hand up for round one and to be a competitive side you need that.
“All set for an exciting year, with the young guys at the club it is pretty exciting to watch how they go about it.”
