The joy and emotion after a hard fought win is why Daniel Giansiracusa chose to go around again in 2014 and the Western Bulldogs’ victory against Richmond on Saturday allowed just that.
“When you get wins on the weekend and to be a part of that – that’s why I decided to play on,” Giansiracusa said.
“When that siren went and the boys were pretty happy obviously, when I retire I won’t get that feeling ever again.
“That’s why I’ve come back and I’m happy just to play whatever role they want me to.”
Set to join the Dogs coaching ranks at the end of the season, the Club veteran is using this year to add value as a player, but learn as much as he can as a budding coach.
“To have that hands-on role when I’m on the bench and not just sitting there waiting to come on, I think it keeps me in the game as well,” he said.
“So when I do come on I think I can get into the game pretty quickly.
“I enjoy that side of it and I hope the younger guys and the other players in the team get a bit out of that.”
Giansiracusa said his highest priority was still on playing his role for the team and using his experience to guide his young teammates on game day.
“I’ve still got to remember that I am a player and not to look too far ahead into that coaching side of things but also skill myself up and be ready for when that comes next year,” he said.
“Whether that be working with TAC Cup clubs or doing courses and things like that.
“There’s no better way to learn off not only Macca but the other coaches at the footy club and then to be able to do it on match day – it’s a pretty good opportunity that I’ve got.”
