The words ‘NAB Challenge’ prick the ears of any dedicated AFL Fantasy coach and with the first bounce just weeks away, research on the Western Bulldogs’ current crop of players will be high on the agenda.
There are a great number of mid-tier options of Bulldog defenders who can help round out your team.
Brett Goodes took the mantle as one of the most popular choices throughout 2013 and while he may not come with the rookie price tag this season, he has been a standout over summer and should come into consideration.
The mainstays in the backline Robert Murphy ($459,600), Jordan Roughead ($281,800) and Dale Morris ($260,900) also provide reliable and consistent options at various price points.
Missing just three games between them, the trio could be good insurance to avoid the backline injury and depth issues that caused headaches for many coaches last season.
The Bulldogs also possess a number of emerging options which could pay dividends as the season progresses, including Jason Johannisen ($312,300), Sam Darley ($264,400) and draftee Matt Fuller ($151,800).
Speedster Johannisen began to take on more responsibility running the ball out of the back half in season 2013, missing just one game before being struck down by injury in round 15 against GWS Giants.
New addition Darley could also provide a value option if he can force his way into the Bulldogs lineup throughout the season – averaging 59.5 points in AFL Fantasy in 2013 for the GWS Giants.
The Bulldogs second round selection in the 2013 AFL Draft, 23-year-old Fuller, could also get his first taste of senior football this season as a ready-made rebounding defender, which could provide an alternative, lower-priced option.
Michael Talia is another who is expected to see more senior football in 2014, however his elevated starting price of ($350,500) makes him a slightly riskier option.
In his favour however, the Bulldog did average 66.7 per game last season, including a personal best 98 points in the round that he received his Rising Star Nomination in round 15 and should build on last year’s form.
