A Barry Hall masterclass was behind the Western Bulldogs’ biggest ever win over Carlton, 10 years ago at Docklands.
On his way to 80 goals for the season, Hall kicked six majors against the Blues in Round 15, 2010 as the Dogs marched to a 68-point victory.
It started a run of five straight wins, which cemented the Dogs’ spot in the finals.
Off the back of a narrow loss to Hawthorn, the Bulldogs started brightly against the Blues, who had thrashed the Brisbane Lions a week earlier.
The Dogs kicked four of the first five goals of the game – two to Hall – to lead by 15 points at quarter time. They kicked a further six goals in the second to create a stranglehold on the contest.
The game was well and truly put to bed early in the third term, when Hall’s fourth, fifth and sixth goals took the margin out to 46 points at the 10-minute mark.
For good measure, the Dogs made sure they won all four quarters, stretching the lead to more than 10 goals and surpassing their previous highest winning margin against the Blues of 59 points, which they registered in 1989.
Hall’s half dozen goals (he also took nine marks) rightly earned him the three Brownlow votes, while Matthew Boyd’s 33-disposals and two goals saw him receive two votes and Adam Cooney received one.
The Bulldogs went on to win 14 games in 2010, and eventually lost to St Kilda in the Preliminary Final.
