Terry Wallace's time as coach at Whitten Oval was a particularly productive one for the Bulldogs, particularly against Collingwood.
Some of the Dogs' best wins over the Magpies came during the Wallace era, which stretched from late 1996 to the end of 2002.
One of those wins came on this day in 1999, when the Dogs put the Pies to the sword in a Friday night showcase game at the MCG.
Collingwood came into the match on the back of resounding 40-point win over Fremantle at the same venue a week earlier, while the Dogs were looking to consolidate a place in the top eight, having climbed in with a 64-point thrashing of Melbourne six days earlier.
Things did not start well for the Dogs. Within two minutes of the start Matthew Dent was carried off with a leg injury that left the Dogs a man down for the rest of the night, and when Anthony Rocca took a big mark and kicked the first goal of the night for Collingwood, things did not bode well.
The loss of Dent did not put a dent in the Bulldogs' enthusiasm, though, and they began to turn things around from that moment. Strong tackling from Brett Montgomery in the forward line saw Paul Hudson pounce on a loose ball and goal to set the Dogs on the right track and kick off a big night for the classy forward.
With Stephen Powell providing plenty of drive, the Dogs added three more goals for the quarter — including a beautiful post-siren goal from outside 50 by Leon Cameron — to lead by 14 points at quarter time.
Three more goals from Hudson took the margin out to four goals late in the second term but a goal to Collingwood cut it back to 18 points at half time, by which time the Bulldogs had lost another soldier, with Scott Wynd coming off with a leg injury.
Undeterred by being two men down on the bench, the Bulldogs turned it up a notch in the third quarter. After Hudson booted his fifth major, he handed the goalkicking reins over to fellow forward James Cook, who kicked two for the term, while Nathan Brown, Scott West and Adam Contessa each added one. The Dogs went to the three-quarter time huddle with a commanding 37-point lead.
With the heat out of the game, play opened up in the final quarter, with each side adding five goals. The Dogs kicked 5.3 to 5.2 to make it four winning quarters, closing out a very impressive 38-point win.
Scott West put in another three-vote performance, collecting 33 possessions to go with his goal, while Powell (31 disposals), Paul Dimattina (27 touches and two goals) and Chris Grant (21 possessions) were all key contributors.
The win was the Bulldogs' third in a row, and the Dogs would go on to win another 10 of the remaining 13 matches in the home-and-away rounds, to secure a top four finish for a third consecutive season.
