Western Bulldogs AFLW coach Nathan Burke says he was most impressed by his side’s ability to quickly adapt to the playing conditions in Sunday’s 25-point win over St Kilda.

Coaching from the interchange bench in his first game at the helm, Burke was pleased with how the group managed to stay focused and play their roles.

“We had to control between our ears and make sure we were ready to play, which we did,” Burke said post-game.

“The way the game was played wasn’t necessarily the way we’ve been training and preparing the whole summer – after quarter time (we noticed our game-plan) wasn’t really how the game was being played.

“For the players to be able to switch and think ‘this is a different style, this is how we need to play’ without me having to say it, was really pleasing.”

Burke was also happy to get the first win of the season out of the way.

“I had enormous faith in the players that we were going to play a brand of football that would win the game, but you are never 100% sure that will happen once you get out there,” he said.

“To our girls’ credit, they were outstanding in the first quarter which shows they came with the right mindset to play the game we wanted to play.

“Credit to the Saints too, I was hoping they would take their foot off the pedal where we could get ahead, but they didn’t – we couldn’t break them open.”
