A four goal first half during Saturday’s Intra Club match at Victoria University Whitten Oval showcased to fans and rivals alike what an imposing figure Jack Redpath is when he’s fit and firing.
Speaking to gathered media during the Club’s Community Camp in Ballarat, 25-year-old Redpath said that he’s confident he can continue to build on his sparkling late season form where he kicked 13 goals over the last six games, including five separate multi-goal hauls.
Redpath attributes his good run to finding his place, a sense of belonging, at AFL level.
“(It was about) gaining a little bit of confidence and realising you are good enough at this level, he said.
“And I think the training side of things as well.
“Just training harder, working harder and just pushing your body a bit harder when you probably thought you were pushing yourself hard, you might not have been.”
With the new found confidence has come a sense of enjoyment that wasn’t there in the early days of his career, something he attributes to second year coach Luke Beveridge.
“The enjoyment that Bevo brought to my footy and, I think, us as a team last year… it was well and truly the best year of my life, I loved it.
“I love playing for the Club and I’m just excited to be playing there this year.”
When the Kyneton product left the field with a hip complaint late in the second term of Saturday’s game, the 4000 Bulldogs fans in attendance held their breath in unison, but the bullocking forward said he could have come back on but sat out the rest of the match as a precaution.
“It’s alright,” he said.
“I was a little bit nervy at the start but it’s just a knock and they didn’t want me to go back on the field.
“I could have come back on but it’s nice to have them look after me like that, but I’ll be right to train this week.”
While there’s been much said around the football world as to whether Redpath and fellow tall forward Tom Boyd can play together, he isn’t buying into it.
“As long as we’re both playing well and we’re both in good form.
“Tommy’s had a great preseason and I feel like I’ve had another good preseason, but in the end, I’m just trying to look after myself, look after my body, so why not if we’re both in good form and playing good footy?
“I love training with him, I love playing with him… I just see him as a mate who’s training and trying to get better himself.”
