Set to hit packs with more intensity in 2014, Jack Macrae has a few extra centimetres and an impressive ten kilograms on his side since being drafted.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to grow a few extra centimetres so I am at about 190/191 now – so height will hopefully stay about the same and just get a bit bigger as well,” Macrae said.
“About ten kilos now since I got drafted a year ago, so I think they are looking to just taper that off a bit now
“I am about 84kg now so stay around there until the start of next year and then slowly work it up over the next few years.”
While he spent the majority of his debut season dashing down the wing and linking up with the forward line, the 19-year-old expects to be winning more of his own ball next year.
“I guess looking to play a bit more of an inside role as well and not just stay on the half forward flank and the wing,” he said.
“I am working with [Steven] Kingy and Joel Corey who has recently joined us, on our contested side of the game [and] looking to improve that.
“Naturally I have grown up more of an outside mid, but I think I’ve got the capabilities to play an inside-outside role which I think would really help the Club.”
An increased fitness base has also allowed Macrae to compete in all of the fitness and running drills so far this summer, even with a new and more intense program.
“Justin Cordy the new fitness manager has drilled us in the running a lot more and that is a big step up from last pre-season,” he said.
“Especially with my body now I am able to complete all the running sessions which has been great.
Heading into his second year at the Club, the normally reserved midfielder is also finding his voice out on the training track.
“Naturally just being a bit older you come out of yourself a bit more, and a bit more vocal around the club and on the track,” he said.
“I think leadership is something we all should aspire to.”
