Senior spots will be hotly contested commodities next season, with the Western Bulldogs young crop already contemplating what is at stake, according to Assistant Coach Steven King.

With the influx in highly touted draft picks and battle ready mature-aged recruits, the competition is heating up, with each individual keen to show their wares.

“The boys have probably seen how everyone has presented back from training and with that you get Dale Morris being able to participate fully in training, Coons is up and about at the moment,” King said.

“You bring in some pretty highly sought after…draft picks in the first round that come in.

“All of a sudden people look around and think 12 mids don’t fit into six every week.

“I think we are going to really start creating some depth now and some real competition for spots."

A heavy focus has been put on kicking efficiency and building a solid fitness base this pre-season but not to the detriment of the weights and strength program.

The young Bulldogs can still anticipate a heavy workload in the gym, as they build towards becoming a more imposing force on the field next season.

“This week was meant to be a bit of a download after three… solid weeks,” he said.

“I guess the main focus for us has just been trying to get some miles in their legs.

“The three main focuses for us have been skill work just with our kicking efficiency, getting bigger and stronger but also building a tank, so we can really launch up into some higher intensity stuff after Christmas.”
