VERSATILITY will be the key factor in Andrejs Everitt's quest to play regular senior football for the Western Bulldogs next year after a tumultuous trade period that threatened his place at the club.

The 20-year-old was a hot topic during trade week after his management informed the club he was frustrated with the lack of senior opportunities he received in 2009.

Tom Williams, when fully fit, was preferred as the centre half-back option, which froze Everitt out of the side and left him to impress when brought in as a late replacement for ruckman Ben Hudson in round 22.

"We now need to look at the fact he can play in other spots and we'll focus on that over the summer," Everitt's manager Ricky Nixon told afl.com.au on Friday.

"I thought he was lacking opportunities at the Bulldogs, and Tom was probably getting opportunities ahead of him."

Nixon said the tense trade week situation between Everitt and the club enabled the two parties to clear the air.

"Sometimes you can use the trade period to your advantage to bring things to a head, so I've tried to make sure [coach Rodney Eade and Everitt] understand each other a bit better," he said.

"I think that's worked, so they'll go into pre-season – rather than perhaps not agreeing with each other on a couple of things – they know where each other is at now.

"They understand they've got to work together."

Nixon says the Bulldogs have not told Everitt he'll automatically receive more opportunities next year than the seven senior games he played this season.

However, the promising first-round draft pick remains committed to putting in a strong pre-season in order to give himself the best chance of earning consistent selection.

The Dogs and Everitt, who signed a new two-year contract towards the end of the season, will now be reunited next month when summer training commences at Whitten Oval.

"He's right to go at the Western Bulldogs. There are no issues there," Nixon said.

"He's spoken to Rodney and he understands the trade couldn't happen.

"They've both discussed what they could have done better this year with each other and we'll get on with it."

Everitt is currently holidaying overseas and will return to training with the main group of Bulldogs on Monday 23 November.

The first to third-year players will be back into it a week earlier.
