Round 1 - Footscray vs. Northern Blues
Sunday, 10 April, 11am.
Victoria University Whitten Oval
Nothing gets footy fans up like the first game of the season, especially if it’s at home. That’s why Footscray's opening round clash against the Northern Blues makes this list. With nine home games to look forward to in season 2016, there are plenty of opportunities to wrap yourself up in red, white and blue and find your spot in the EJ Whitten Stand, but there’s nothing like the first one after a long footy-less summer. The Dogs had their second biggest win of the season against the Blues in round 12, a 103-point victory that the blue boys will surely want to atone for.
Round 7 - Footscray vs. Essendon
Sunday, May 22, 12pm
Windy Hill
Footscray saw a fair bit of the Bombers in the latter stages of the 2015. There was a 22-point win in round 16 at VU Whitten Oval and a narrow loss at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo in round 19. But it was the third meeting in six weeks, this time in a First Semi Final, that stings. Essendon defeated the Dogs by 66-points that day in a dominant display at North Port Oval, ending any hope the ‘Scray had of back to back premierships. No one likes to exit a season that way and Bulldog army are sure to be fired up for the return bout.
Round 9 - Footscray vs. Williamstown Seagulls
Sunday, June 5, 11am
Victoria University Whitten Oval
They’re a traditional western suburbs rival and they won the 2015 flag. What more do you need? The Bulldogs split their games with Williamstown in 2015, including a round 17 victory at a blustery Burbank Oval that helped consolidate a top four spot and was one of the best wins of the season. There’s always plenty on the line when the ‘Scray take on the Seagulls, and with the young Dogs wanting to prove themselves, 2016 shouldn’t be any different.
Round 14 - Footscray vs. Richmond
Saturday, July 9, 2pm
Victoria University Whitten Oval
This one will be fun. The Bulldogs got the points in a thriller at Punt Road in round 10 in 2015, and who can forget Fletcher Roberts’ after the siren barrel that secured Footscray a home final in 2014? As an added bonus in 2016, the clubs’ second meeting of the VFL season will be at VU Whitten Oval on a Saturday afternoon. This will give the red, white and blue faithful just enough time to get to Etihad Stadium to watch the senior teams clash again under lights. Gather the pack – this day will be a highlight of the Bulldogs' calendar.
Round 17 - Footscray vs. Box Hill Hawks
Saturday, July 30, 12pm
Victoria University Whitten Oval
Similar to the Essendon clash earlier in the year, the young Bulldogs will be out for revenge when they to take on the Hawks late in season 2016. Box Hill struck the first blow of the 2015 finals campaign when they knocked over the Bulldogs to the tune of 40 points at Box Hill City Oval in the Qualifying Final. The Hawks will remember succumbjng to a late game Bulldog charge in the 2014 VFL Grand Final, so the rivalry remains fierce. You can be sure both sides will be keenly awaiting the next time the two teams face off in round 17.
