A thriving defensive group has been the driver to Easton Wood’s exceptional form in recent weeks.
Wood is averaging 17 disposals and six marks off the half back line and currently leads the competition for intercept marks.
His individual form has been outstanding, but the defender says playing alongside Bulldog veterans Bob Murphy and Matthew Boyd has played a big part in his form.
“It’s been awesome with Murphy and Boydy, they’ve got so much experience between them and even though it’s Boydy’s first time playing back in a while, he’s absolutely thrived," said Wood, speaking with 3AW on Thursday night.
“Murphy is a fantastic bloke to be around and he’s such a great leader for us.
“JJ (Jason Johannisen) has been fantastic as well, his confidence to run and carry the ball just makes our job so much easier and we’re just building and bouncing each other.”
Wood has revelled in senior coach Luke Beveridge’s attacking game style, with Wood having kicked five goals in his eight games this season.
“With Luke’s coaching, one of his philosophies has been with that more positive way to move the ball.
“Especially with us in defence, we’re setting up to win the ball back rather than stop or just negate the opposition so we’re thriving and loving that.”
While the Dogs have lacked a degree of consistency in recent weeks, Wood says his side have still gained confidence from a generally positive start to the season.
“As a group with those young guys, we’re going to have those ups and downs but that’s just part of the learning experience.
“To get a few wins early, to get that confidence and get that sort of momentum has been fantastic.”
