Bulldogs veteran Matthew Boyd says the recent appointment of Jordan Roughead as the Club’s vice-captain was undoubtedly the right one.
The former captain, who is also part of the Club’s new leadership group, said in an interview with the Ballarat Courier that the decision to appoint the young defender was made after an impressive six years at the Club.
“He’s been thrown into the role very young, but that’s the sort of calibre that he is as a person.”
The five person leadership squad, finalised this month includes captain Robert Murphy, midfielder Tom Liberatore and Boyd’s fellow veteran Dale Morris.
Boyd emphasised his confidence in Murphy and Roughead to lead the club forward.
“It’s fantastic, not only for Roughie, but also for the footy club, and he’s a great support to Murph.”
Roughead played all 22 matches in 2013 and cemented his spot as the Club’s full-back, after being trialled in various positions in seasons prior.
The 24-year-old suffered a shoulder injury early in 2014 but returned for the second half of the year, providing much needed help in defence and proving his worth both on-field and as a leader for the young side.
Boyd said that although Roughead has performed well over the pre-season, it was his consistency in past seasons that resulted in his appointment.
“It hasn’t been so much about this pre-season, and while it’s been really good, Roughie’s been outstanding over the past couple of years.”
