Western Bulldogs AFLW midfielder Hayley Wildes has announced her retirement from AFL Women’s, ahead of the 2020 season.

A member of the Bulldogs’ AFLW premiership side, the 22-year-old arrived at the Club ahead of the inaugural AFLW season after being selected at overall pick 44 at the 2016 AFLW Draft.

Playing three seasons in red, white and blue, Wildes made the difficult decision to move on from football, in order to fully commit to a recently accepted media role with Melbourne United in the National Basketball League.

“Since arriving at the Bulldogs in 2016, my professional life has changed quite drastically,” Wildes told westernbulldogs.com.au

“Although both the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne United have expressed their willingness to help me successfully complete both roles, I know there will be unavoidable schedule clashes that will inhibit my ability to give 100 per cent to both roles, which is not fair to Melbourne United, my teammates or the Club.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Bulldogs, which has made my decision extremely difficult to make.

“I have created treasured memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. The players, staff and supporters have created an exceptional environment and culture at the Club and I’m really looking forward to witnessing what this group can achieve in the future.”

Women’s Football General Manager, Debbie Lee said that Wildes’ has left a lasting impact on the Club’s AFLW playing group and will be missed in her departure from the Club.

“Hayley has been a valued member of the Club’s women’s football program since the inaugural AFLW season and we are grateful for her contribution over the past three seasons,” Lee told westernbulldogs.com.au

“Hayley has made an incredibly courageous decision and she can be proud that she leaves as a premiership player for the Club, and for the positive impact she has had within the women’s football program.

“We wish Hayley all the best in her next chapter.”
