If there was any doubt surrounding Clay Smith’s inclusion into the Bulldogs senior side so early after returning from his second knee reconstruction, his Bulldogs teammates allayed all of it at the 20 minute mark of the first quarter.
Smith was awarded a free kick deep in the first term 45 metres out from goal and calmly slotted the goal to put the Bulldogs three goals in front.
All 17 of the midfielder’s teammates on the ground rushed to congratulate him, highlighting their delight to have him back in the side.

Smith, who returned through the VFL last week following his second knee reconstruction, only played one senior game in 2014 in round 10 against the Gold Coast after injury interrupted his 2013 and 2014 seasons.
The weekend’s game also marked Smith’s return to Etihad Stadium, with his last match on the ground when he injured his knee for the first time in round 20 of 2013.
Smith said post-match he was glad to get through the match and be part of a big win.
“It’s not a bad win by the boys, it was awesome to be a part of.
“I was just hoping get through today and the boys played awesome, it’s good to be back in the AFL side and getting a win like that there’s no better feeling.”
Smith collected 11 disposals, three marks, two tackles and a goal and should continue to build on the confidence gained from the hit-out.
When asked how it felt to be back out playing, Smith only had two words, “nothing better… nothing better”.
