Joel Corey has been inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame.
The Western Bulldogs midfield coach joined a new group of Hall of Fame inductees on Sunday night, including Simon Black, Peter Bosustow, Charles Doig, Alan Johnson, Bob Shields, Frank “Dick” Walker, Derek Kickett, Keith Narkle and umpire Mike Ball.
Corey started his career at East Perth, playing 11 games before he was drafted to Geelong in the 1999 National Draft. He achieved the ultimate success as a Geelong triple premiership player (2007, 2009, 2011).
He received Geelong’s Carji Greeves Medal for the Fairest and Best player on two occasions (2005,2008) and All Australian honours in 2007 and 2008.
“You’ve got a mixture of emotions leaving your family and your place of birth, with the adventure and the journey that might lay ahead,” Corey told wafootball.com.au
“I was quite naïve being West Australian, I tended to focus on the WA teams and the WAFL.
“I was sure I was running around with some really good players (at Geelong), I just didn’t have an understanding of quite how good they were and what they’d previously achieved in their careers, but I knew I was part of a special group.”
Corey has been part of the Western Bulldogs’ coaching staff since 2013.
