A development focus throughout the season will hopefully keep Footscray heading in the right direction, according to VFL coach Ashley Hansen.

The reigning premiers currently sit fourth on the VFL ladder with a close tussle expected against ladder-leaders Williamstown this weekend.

Hansen said that it was important his side continued to work with development at the forefront of their minds.

“Our focus will not change for the entirety of the season, by maintaining a development focus it creates consistency with the players and allows us to be true to our vision which ultimately leads to success anyway.”

The Dogs went down by 38 points the last time they played the Seagulls and Hansen said he expected his players to be ready for the challenge this Sunday.

“Williamstown were very good last time we played them and we expect nothing less on the weekend.

“They are on top for a reason and this provides a fantastic opportunity for many of our young players to compete against experienced VFL players which will bring out the best in them.

“Development can come through many experiences and the weekend will provide a great environment for many of these which helps us coach, teach and mentor different aspects of their performance.”

Potential father-son recruit Darcy MacPherson will play as the 23rd man on Sunday afternoon, the son of former Bulldog Stephen MacPherson.

Hansen said he looked forward to MacPherson continuing his development.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for ‘Darce’ who has a family connection with the Club and has returned from injury to play some really good football with the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup competition over the past month.

“The 23rd rule was created for such opportunities to occur and we are excited that it can be given again to a player who can wear the same colours his father did.”
