Victoria University Whitten Oval was awash in red, white and blue today as thousands packed the Club’s West Footscray headquarters for the grand final open training session.
With Channel Nine’s The Today Show broadcasting live from the Club café, the day started early for many of the faithful who came down to catch a glimpse of their heroes ahead of Saturday’s Grand Final.
When the team hit the track at around 10:30 they were met with a roar that wouldn’t have been heard at the corner of Gordon and Barkly Streets since the Club last played matches for premiership points there back in 1997.
From bagpipes in the EJ Whitten Stand and a brass section outside of the ground, to heroes of the 1954 and 1961 teams watching over proceedings, a carnival like atmosphere gripped the old ground and the thousands packed in.
“I’ve been waiting my whole life for this,” one supporter told Fox Sports, “I even went to Footscray primary school, so it’s in the blood.
“I never thought I’d see this day.”
And while some fans were still struggling to come to grips with the fact that their side would be playing off for a premiership in three days’ time, there was on optimistic air among the fans.
“It would mean the world if the Doggies won,” said one.
“The year has had lots of obstacles and they’ve managed to get over most of them, and they’e got the backing of a really good crowd and a really good group of supporters.”
Assistant coach Joel Corey, speaking to media after training said it was great for the team to be able to experience the support up close.
“I was a great turnout, Corey said.
“I can’t say I’ve been involved in such a big turnout for training sessions, and it’s fantastic for the boys to experience it.
“And from now on it will be a little bit more focused [and] come Saturday they’ll be ready.”
