As good as it sounds soaking up the sun in Bali, Thailand and Byron Bay, Lukas Webb couldn’t wait to get back to West Footscray and get to work.

The 20-year-old averaged 26 disposals, five tackles and kicked thirteen goals for Footscray this season as an inside midfielder, and was named best on ground five times, including in the Preliminary Final win over Collingwood

Initially earmarked as a running defender, Webb carved out a genuine presence in the engine room of the 2016 VFL premiers, and is now looking to add enough new tricks to break into the senior team.

Until then, though, Webb said he’s got some work to do and he’s eager to add to his career total of 15 games.

“I probably need to work on my tank a little bit so I’ll have a crack at that over the pre-season and hopefully go into this season flying,” he told westernulldogs.com.au after training on Thursday.

“I obviously played a little bit in the midfield last year so I’m just hoping to improve that game a bit.

“We’ve got a vast array of midfielders here – there’s plenty of us – it’s a good bunch to learn of so I’ll just keep continuing to improve.”

The first to fourth year players began their pre-season training on Monday, and alongside the newest crop of draftees were a couple of familiar faces, veterans Stewart Crameri and Travis Cloke.

The site of Crameri kicking a footy around has been a welcome sight to his teammates, Webb said.

“It’s really good having Cram back out there."

Travis Cloke, has also impressed his new teammates early.

“Yeah he’s been really good actually, his tan’s pretty good and he’s got a few of the boys jealous," Webb joked.

“He’s going really good on the track, he’s got his voice up and he’s slotted in really nicely.”
