While the footy world had been looking forward to watching big men Jack Redpath and Tom Boyd play together on Saturday night, it was the Dogs’ little men that would inflict the most damage to the Suns’ hopes of victory.
The Dogs posted 15 goals at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns, cracking the much-discussed 100 points mark in the 48-point victory over the Gold Coast Suns.
Clay Smith and Mitch Wallis led the way with three goals each, while Koby Stevens and Liam Picken were the only other multiple goal scorers.
Smith, talking with Fox Footy post-match, said the work of the big men created the opportunities that the small forwards and midfielders were able to take advantage of.
“I think it’s the big fellas that helped out, Smith said.
“We have big targets to kick to so we get under their feet and they help us out a fair bit.
“I think Tommy [Boyd] kicked one or two and the boys got around him which was great, and Big Red [Redpath] keeps doing his thing.
“But yeah, the smalls got it done tonight.”
In his third game back, Smith could easily have had a bag to his name but he hit the post three times and another goal was disallowed after he was pinged for running too far.
Dogs fans, however, will just be pleased that Smith got through the match after he sustained what looked to be a heavy hit to his back late in the second quarter.
In typical Clay fashion, he was able to shrug off the discomfort and play on.
“I got a knee straight on the bone, it got me a ripper too but it was alright, [but] I got on the bike at half time and kept ticking over.”
Smith, smalls get the job done
The big boys provided the contest, and the little men did the rest.
