Western Bulldogs assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa has revealed the secret behind Matthew Suckling’s ability to kick the football on the unique angles that he does.

Appearing on the Club’s Freedom in a Cage podcast this week, Giansiracusa said growing up in a court in Wagga Wagga shaped the 29-year-old capacity to caress the ball on seemingly impossible arcs.

“The reason he does is that he grew up in a court,” he said.

“Ash Hansen is the one to talk to about it. He's gone, 'how did that happen?’

“(He said), we had little targets and the court was cut off with angles so that's why he does the flick, and still gets his foot around.”

Podcast co-host Bob Murphy said he often marvelled at where the former Hawk was able to place the ball.

“He kicks the ball like a left-handed forehand in tennis, it's that motion, it's a different angle.

It's like he's got another joint in his knee or something, it's very unusual,” he said.

“I've been behind him on the football field before and he's kicked the ball where it's not even an option.  That's a double skill of being able to see it and having the angle of your leg to be able to do it.”

A big part of it, according to Giansiracusa, is also in how he holds the football before the drop.

“He'll tilt the ball cos he knows he's going there, and he knows his foot is going to come through a certain way.

“It’s hard to defend.”
