It was quite the sight as Harry Taylor lined up for goal after siren on Friday night, with twelve, yes twelve, Bulldogs players on the mark.
For Dogs fans of a more mature vintage it would have sparked memories of round six, 1988 when Simon Beasley had the chance to snatch a victory after the horn up at the old Carrara Oval.
Not only did Beasley have to contend with a crowd invasion, footage shows the goal umpire, and Beasley himself virtually swamped, but the Bears’ players built a mini-pyramid on the mark, with Mike Richardson climbing onto the shoulders of Matthew Campbell in a move that would eventually lead to the rules being changed.
Richards fell off just as Beasley took his kick, which he missed.
Umpire Brian Sheehan later admitted that he’d threated the home side with a 15-metre penalty due to the amount of people of the field that would have put the veteran Dog in the square, but it wasn’t to be, and the Bears would hold on by a point.
