Western Bulldogs forward Clay Smith is expected to miss up to seven weeks of football after undergoing surgery on his right knee to repair cartilage damage.
The 24-year-old had been suffering ongoing soreness and swelling and went under the knife last week, according to Club Medical Services Manager Chris Bell.
"Clay had an arthroscope on Thursday night to repair some of the cartilage damage in his right knee,” Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au
"We're going to systematically work through a process with Clay over the next couple of weeks but at this stage we expect him to miss the next six to seven weeks of footy."
Young Dogs Josh Schache and Brad Lynch have both emerged from Footscray's 81-point win over Coburg with questions marks, with Lynch expected to spend an extended period on the sideline with a hamstring injury, according to Bell.
"Brad hurt his hamstring chasing an opposition player during the VFL game on the weekend,” he said.
“Brad is a high-speed player so we're going to have to take our time with re-loading his top end speed. At this stage we're expecting (him) to miss the next six to eight weeks of footy.”
Schache will face a test after leaving the game early with an ankle injury.
The 20-year-old key forward had made a successful return from a calf strain but will face a fitness test later in the week, as will Jackson Trengove, who's recovering from a shoulder injury.
Bell said Trengove has regained a full range of motion but it’s yet to be determined if he has regained his full strength.
