Western Bulldogs star midfielder Marcus Bontempelli has been selected as a vice-captain in Nat Fyfe’s FLYERS team for the 2019 AFLX tournament.
The four captains of the AFLX teams – Fyfe, Eddie Betts, Patrick Dangerfield and Jack Riewoldt – selected their right-hand men ahead of the second edition of the AFL’s shorter format of the game.
Betts chose Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne for team DEADLY, Dangerfield selected Lion Luke Hodge for team BOLTS and Riewoldt picked Carlton’s Patrick Cripps for team RAMPAGE.
Bontempelli will have his first try at the AFLX format when the competition runs on Friday, February 22 at Marvel Stadium.
“It’s an exciting opportunity, and a rare one at that, to play with players who you love to watch,” Bontempelli said.
“I cannot wait to see who will join team FLYERS because it’s going to be an awesome way to start 2019.”

AFLX will be played on a rectangular field and aims to showcase the unique and most thrilling aspects of the game to engage new fans.
The 2019 tournament will see four teams compete in a round-robin format culminating in a Grand Final between the top two teams.
A live draft event will be held in early February where the four captains will have the ability to build their teams from a pool of the game’s best. There will be a limit of four players per AFL club competing in the AFLX 2019 tournament.
Each team will consist of 14 players, with eight players on the field at any one time and six on the bench. The AFLX 2019 matches will consist of two ten-minute halves and feature ten-point super goals.
There will be a dedicated kids zone located along one boundary line on the field of play featuring novelty-sized games, face painters, balloon artists and colour crew PLUS loads of giveaways. Access if available when purchasing tickets for an additional $10.00.
