The haircut may not be Luke Beveridge’s cup of tea, but he sees plenty to like in Roarke Smith.

In tough conditions, Smith played the best game of his AFL career to date, racking up 23 disposals in the wet to go with six tackles in a memorable win for the Western Bulldogs.

Plus a maiden goal at AFL level – an impressive snap from 45 metres out in the wet.

“I missed one last week, probably the easiest set shot of my life,” Smith said post game.

“I’d probably rather kick this one as my first because it was a bit nicer – I felt like I had a bit of space, and chucked it on that left boot and luckily enough it went through.

“I was just smiling the whole time. All the boys got around me, it was an unbelievable feeling.”

Largely due to injury, Smith hasn’t had the chance to establish himself at AFL level.

Two knee reconstructions have seen the 22-year-old make just 14 AFL appearances since making his debut in 2015.

But Beveridge has given him the belief he belongs.

“I’m just so happy for him to be able to play a game like he did tonight,” the Bulldogs’ coach said post-game.

“It’s difficult for the supporters because they haven’t seen him blossom at the level, but hopefully tonight’s an indication that he can.

“He’s had to persevere and finally got his chance. He hasn’t had a sustained run at AFL level ever with his two knee reconstructions.

“He started off as a backman, so we’ve given him new responsibilities as a winger and a forward, and he plays it really well. He stands up in tackles, keeps his feet, he’s very creative and kicks well both feet. He’s diligent, he’s a very team oriented player.”

But the haircut doesn’t sit well with the coach – or Mum – according to Smith.

“I’m sick of the long hair, tying it up and all that,” he said post game.

“I know it’s a bit dirty, and I had so much hate from last week’s game. Mum’s telling me to cut it.

“(Bevo’s) actually not a big fan of it, he wants me to go around to his and he wants to cut it himself. He cuts his own hair and does not a bad job, he could probably fix mine up for me.”

Whether the haircut stays or goes, there’s more to be seen of Smith in red, white and blue at AFL level.
