A look at some of the key takeaways from Sunday’s narrow loss to Collingwood at Marvel Stadium.

1. Missed chances cost Dogs
Accuracy in front of goal again came back to haunt the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.
Particularly in the second and third terms, where the Dogs produced a combined 3.8 to Collingwood’s 6.3.
The Bulldogs dominated the start of the second term, but could only produce four behinds in the first 20 minutes. That inaccuracy was compounded by the Pies getting the first major of the term – after 20 minutes of play – when Jordan de Goey converted.
Having had 23 scoring shots to 17, and 59 inside-50s to 44, there is plenty for the Bulldogs to be optimistic about.
But to win the close ones, they have to start capitalising.

2. Macrae in fine form
Jack Macrae’s form over the past fortnight has been scintillating.
Marcus Bontempelli won plenty of plaudits early in the year, and in recent weeks, it’s been Josh Dunkley and Caleb Daniel earning significant praise.
But Macrae keeps on keeping on.
He had 42 disposals and 13 tackles against the Pies, following on from his 37 disposals and eight tackles against the Blues.
He’s had a significant impact for the Dogs in 2019, averaging 31 touches and five tackles per match.

3. Young Dogs step up
With Tom Liberatore sidelined due to a knee injury, the question was asked – who will step up?
The response on Sunday was a positive one.
Pat Lipinski continued his ball-winning form, racking up a career-high 32 disposals.
Ed Richards impressed on his AFL return with 23 disposals and four inside-50s, utilising his pace from a wing, and Bailey Williams spent more time on the ball, laying five tackles and picking up 17 touches.
Marcus Bontempelli (10 clearances) and Josh Dunkley (seven clearances) racking up an equal-game high 17 contested possessions each also helped.

And one more thing…

We love Anthony Hudson’s commentary. But can you picture the carry-on if Brian Taylor had been commentating when Sam Lloyd plucked his Mark of the Year contender? Lllllllllllllllloyd. Wowee.
