The Western Bulldogs have acquired Sam Davidson with Pick 51 in the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft.

Davidson is a mature-age tall forward from Richmond VFL with impressive aerial ability and running capacity, who was plucked out of local footy in Gippsland this year to try his hand at VFL.

He did not disappoint in his debut state-league campaign, kicking 26 goals across 17 games to claim the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell medal as the league’s most promising young player.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a six-goal haul against the Bullants and a four-goal outing against Port Melbourne while also spending some time on the wing.

Currently studying medicine at university, Davidson’s rapid footy rise while juggling his studies has impressed many, and will only continue to thrive in an elite environment.

Here’s how Fox Footy described Davidson:

Sam Davidson had an eye-catching year for the Tigers, averaging 14 disposals, three marks and three tackles from 17 state league outings. He is an elite runner and strong ball-user who can play as a forward or through the midfield. He booted 26 goals for the Tigers, which also saw him finish the season as the club’s leading goalkicker. The Maffra product works hard, is clean with the footy and earned a State Combine invite, which is a good indication of the interest he has at AFL level.
