Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains says the Club is relishing the opportunity to host it’s first home AFL Final in eight years.
Bains shared the excitement with Gerard Whateley on SEN ahead of next Friday night’s Elimination Final against Hawthorn at the MCG.
“From a men’s perspective, we’re unbelievably excited to be playing a final at the MCG on a Friday night – I think early indications are a crowd of in excess of 90,000 given there won’t be many finals in Melbourne this September,” Bains said on Wednesday morning.
“From within our playing group, there is a level of belief if we can sustain the momentum, you can go deep.
“Everyone goes back to 2016, but in 2021, we disappointingly fell away in the last few weeks and missed the top four spot by the barest of percentages but from 5th, we were able to get to a Grand Final.
“Ideally, we want to be in the top four, but we don't need to be to potentially (go deep).
“The reality is though no one's looking further than this first final.
“I think both teams have played really exciting football across the season, so for fans it'll be an absolute treat to watch.”
In celebrating the mens’ finals qualification, Bains also expressed disappointment at the fixturing clash with the AFLW Bulldogs’ first home game of the season - currently scheduled for a 5.05pm bounce.
“Clearly, we’re disappointed to have the clash, and the AFL has been understanding of that as well...they’ve been very open to looking at a solution where we can get some clear air for that W game,” Bains said.
“From the AFL’s perspective, in terms of the relationship and agreement they have with the Players Association, there are certain metrics around crowds and broadcast - so it's in their interest to obviously ensure clear air.
“They have been working diligently in the background on looking at an alternative which has been great.
“Obviously the season starts this weekend and we're really conscious of supporting our program and giving our fans and members most importantly, the opportunity to see both teams play in Melbourne (next weekend).”
