Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge says the challenge of maintaining momentum this season remains a key focus for his team.

With just three games remaining in the home and away season, the Bulldogs sit in seventh spot on the ladder ahead of outings against Adelaide, North Melbourne and GWS.

Speaking after the Melbourne win on Friday night, Beveridge said it was important to keep a week-to-week focus.

“That’s where the challenge is – the maintenance of momentum isn’t easy. The game is hard, and we’ve seen this year how even the competition is,” he said.

“Whether it’s a team near the top or near the bottom, your fortunes can change pretty quickly. That can be because your opposition has surprised you and ambushed you, but it can also be because you have a bit of bad luck with injury or whatever it may be.

“You don’t take anything for granted – we’re just trying to stay on edge.

“What’s come out of the last two and a half months is that we’ve learnt a bit about ourselves, our capabilities and our growth in all of the players really.

“We’ve still got some important challenges up ahead, and need to try and make the most of this momentum.

“I’m one of the supreme optimists – even when things aren’t going so well, I’ve seen enough and have been involved in the game for long enough to know what may be around the corner.”

Beveridge was also full of praise for his captain Marcus Bontempelli, who led by example with 33 disposals, seven marks, five clearances and two goals against the Dees.

"His first half was extraordinary, wasn't it?" Beveridge said.

"Is he the greatest Bulldog ever? Well, I mean, at the end of his career he just may be, but he's got a few years left."
