The Footscray Bulldogs have suffered their first loss of the 2024 Smithy's VFL season on Friday night at Mission Whitten Oval, falling to the Brisbane Lions in a hard-fought contest.
Despite a valiant effort, the Bulldogs couldn't overcome the Lions' early dominance, succumbing to a final score of 14.11 (95) to 17.11 (113).
The match began with the Brisbane Lions asserting their dominance early, capitalising on swift coast-to-coast transitions and showcasing an aggressive defence in their backline. This early pressure saw the Lions take control of the game, establishing a significant lead by the first quarter.
The 'Scray struggled to break through Brisbane's defensive setup, trailing by 23 points at the first change.
AFL mid-season draftee Kelsey Rypstra made an impressive debut for the Bulldogs, kicking one of their two second-quarter goals and adding a spark.
The third quarter saw a renewed intensity from Footscray, but despite their efforts, the Lions managed to maintain their lead - heading into the final quarter with a 24-point advantage.
In the final term, Footscray continued to fight, showing great spirit and determination.
Trent Bianco added to his season tally with two important majors, while Sam Willoughby showcased his strengths at the contest with 13 touches, seven tackles and a goal.
Cooper Craig-Peters was instrumental, securing 32 disposals, seven tackles and 15 clearances, with his efforts setting up numerous scoring opportunities, while Oskar Baker also impressed with 29 touches, seven marks and a goal.
The defeat is the Bulldogs' first flaw of the season, sitting with a win-loss record of 9-1.
They will look to regroup ahead of their next clash against the Sydney Swans at Mission Whitten Oval on Saturday 15 June at 11.05 am.
