Western Bulldogs leader Caleb Daniel says playing versatility has always been a key focus for the team.

While he’s most typically known for his skills across half-back, Daniel’s ability to play a number of roles – whether that be forward, midfield or back – has held both himself and the team in good stead.

“I think something that Bevo really instilled in us from the moment that he came in, was that he wants us to be able to play different roles,” Daniel told 3AW on Wednesday night.

“On the weekend, we saw an injury to Nick Coffield early in the game so we needed Bailey Williams to go back off the wing and he performed tremendously there.

“Then Ed Richards went down, which meant Harvey Gallagher (needed) to play half-back, so it’s about those in-game changes.

“Being able to play multiple roles is extremely important, not just for us (in defence) but for the whole team.

“Bevo’s instilled that in us – in the public domain sometimes people try and shoot down the selection areas, but (the coaches) are obviously looking at the positives of a player in that position and what he can do for the team.

“You have to take that with how it comes.”

Another player Daniel praised for his flexibility was emerging tall Sam Darcy.

“He’s a bit of a freak – he’s 210cm and can move the ball pretty well,” Daniel said.

“He can kick on both feet and is just an amazing player. He’s only going to grow by being (exposed) to more AFL level.

“I honestly don’t know where he is best suited - it’s probably a good problem to have at the moment, with the stocks that we have up forward and the guys that are playing their roles down back.

“Having Darce able to go down both ends is only going to be good for us.”

The Bulldogs will host West Coast at Marvel Stadium on Easter Sunday.
