Western Bulldogs captain Matthew Boyd says the team is continually developing even though this season’s results and the current ladder position may not suggest so.
A disappointing past two months has seen only the solitary win for the 15th placed Bulldogs, but there’s no need to panic according to the 201 game stalwart.
“From an outsider’s perspective, you look at the ladder, positions on the ladder and wins and losses and I guess they’re [members and fans] disappointed with that and you can’t blame them,” Boyd said.
“But from and internal perspective, we’re really pleased with the development that we’re showing internally - it might not look that way from an external point of view but there’s certainly a lot of things we’re doing well at this footy Club.”
The recent lean patch has no doubt tested the patience of the Bulldog faithful but the two-time All-Australian said that the onus was on the leaders to ensure morale was high and players were continually improving internally at the kennel.
“The approach and focus from the leadership group and the leaders around the club have been to maintain a positive attitude,” Boyd said.
“As a professional footballer and a competitive person, we don’t want to be losing games but our focus is to make sure the standards of the place are high and that’s something that the leaders are doing really well.”
Boyd said that although the season has thrown up its challenges, there have been some obvious shining lights — in particular the development and form of young father-son recruits Mitch Wallis and Tom Liberatore.
“You look at Libba who had a fantastic year last year and he’s continued on that form and Mitch Wallis is a much improved player and it’s fantastic to see because he puts so much work and effort into his game and into his lifestyle as an AFL footballer,” he said.
