A 44-point final term saw the Western Bulldogs defeat the GWS Giants in Canberra on Saturday, with a trademark Shaun Higgins performance instrumental in the win.

The Bulldogs rallied after a slow start to overcome the plucky Giants and Higgins’ courage and poise were pivotal in the comeback.

“It was pleasing [in] the second half, we probably got away from things early,” Higgins said.

“[There’s] promising signs when guys can bounce back like that and start to play the footy that we know we can.”

The Giants held a 20 point lead at the main change but a more experienced Bulldogs outfit were able to chip away at the margin in the second half. 

Higgins said the Bulldogs were able to reset in the third term and get back to the defensive and contested style of play that they’re known for.  

“We were able to set the ground up pretty well, there was nothing really special in the way we went about it,” he said.

“We just got back to winning the footy in tight, the defenders pushed up the ground and kept it in our forward 50, so if we keep doing that, it’s nice to play in games like that.”

While modest in his own assessment, Higgins’ 29 disposals, five inside 50s and one major saw him named as one of Bulldogs best in the team’s second win of the season.

“You just get games like that where sometimes you get a little bit of the footy,” he said.

“It was pleasing to come away playing ok and also contributing to a really good win.”
