Young midfielders who can win their own ball in contested situations will be held in high esteem come draft day, according to Bulldogs Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple.

While a team’s balance of pace and outside spread can dictate the type of midfielder a Club recruits, the ability to win the contested ball is a non-negotiable in the modern football.

“The ability to... win the contested ball is crucial,” Dalrymple said, “Not [too many] outside players these days, you have got to win your own ball.

“Then it is looking at the mix of… your decision making, what you do with the ball when you get it and then the ability to cover the ground is important.
