The Western Bulldogs have fallen 14 points short against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
With four lead changes in the second half alone, the Bulldogs took a narrow advantage into the final term.
But conceding the last four goals of the match allowed the hosts to run away 10.10 (70) to 8.8 (56) victors in heavy rain and slippery conditions.
It was an arm wrestle of a night, with both sides enjoying patches of momentum throughout the contest.
Tim English opened the Bulldogs’ account with a nice set shot, before the Power responded with two of their own.
The Bulldogs closed the deficit to nine points at the main break, and owned the midfield in the third term with 36 more disposals, 12 more contested possessions, 11 more marks and six more clearances midway through the quarter.
But Port took control when it mattered most, ending the Dogs’ two-game winning streak.
Weightman was a welcome return, slotting four goals from 11 disposals in his first hit-out of the year.
Marcus Bontempelli registered an equal career-best 12 clearances, to go with 23 disposals and seven tackles in an inspiring effort, while English continued his solid start to the season with 28 hit-outs, 23 touches and six marks.
Tom Liberatore was impactful in his 200th game, collecting 26 touches and four clearances, while Adam Treloar notched up a game-high 35 disposals.
The Bulldogs will remain on the road next week, in preparation to meet Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Friday night.
